Soft Tissue Mobilisation
WHAT IS Soft Tissue Mobilisation?
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation is the use of specialised tools to manipulate the skin, myofascia, muscles and tendons with a variety of stroke techniques.
IASTM is derived from Gua Sha, which is used in Chinese Medicine. Unlike Gua Sha which has many applications IASTM is used with the goal of influencing change within the neuro-muscular system. The benefits include improved range of motion, pain reduction and improvements in muscle stiffness.
IASTM can be used in the treatment of
Sports injury e.g strains, sprains or tears
Post surgical scarring
Plantar fasciitis
Achilles tendinitis
Osteoarthritis
The tool creates microtrauma to the soft tissue which stimulates a local inflammatory response. Inflammation is the initiator of healing activities within the body. IASTM can be used to promote healing in problematic areas identified in the initial case history. This action can be particularly beneficial in areas where there is scarring or adhesions.

Are there any side effects to Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation?
Common side effects are usually mild and might include some pain, stiffness, bruising and occasionally swelling. Like many manual therapies it is not unusual to have a treatment reaction for 24- 48 hours post appointment.
